How ChatGPT Recommends Businesses

ChatGPT doesn't have a simple list of "best businesses" that it pulls recommendations from.

It can use information from websites and other online sources to understand businesses and determine which ones may be relevant to a question.

That means being clear, credible, and well represented online matters.

It depends on the question

If someone asks:

"What are some good restaurants in Nelson?"

that's a very different question from:

"What are some restaurants in Nelson that are good for a large family dinner?"

The more specific the question, the more context an AI system needs to determine which businesses are relevant.

In this case, if you're a restaurant that can accommodate large parties, be sure to include that on your website.

Your business needs to clearly communicate things like what you offer, where you operate, who you serve, and what makes you different.

AI can use information from different sources

Your website is important, but it isn't the only source of information about your business.

Depending on the search and the systems involved, AI may encounter information from:

  • Your website
  • Business directories
  • Google Business Profile
  • Reviews
  • News and publications
  • Social media accounts
  • Website schema
  • Industry websites
  • Other websites that mention your business

This is the main reason that consistency matters.

If your website says one thing about your business and other sources say something completely different, it becomes harder for any system to confidently understand who you are and what you offer.

Reviews and reputation matter too

AI systems can encounter reviews and other mentions of your business when researching a recommendation.

That doesn't mean you can simply collect a bunch of reviews and expect ChatGPT to recommend you.

What matters is the overall picture of your business across the web.

Accurate information, genuine reviews, relevant mentions, useful content, and a clear website all contribute to that picture.

There isn't a magic "ChatGPT ranking"

This is probably the most important thing to understand.

There isn't a button you can press or a single optimization that guarantees ChatGPT will recommend your business.

AI search is still evolving, and different AI systems can use different sources and processes.

Focus on making your business easy to understand, trustworthy, relevant, and well represented online.

That's a strategy that can benefit you whether someone finds you through Google, ChatGPT, Gemini, or another search experience.

The goal isn't to trick AI into recommending your business. It's to give it enough accurate, useful information to understand why your business might be the right answer.
