There's no single magic marketing budget that works for every small business. A useful starting point is to consider your revenue, goals, industry, competition, and how much it costs you to acquire a customer.
The right budget is less about hitting a magic percentage and more about making a sustainable investment that produces a return.
Your marketing budget needs to fit your actual business.
If spending $5,000 a month on marketing would put pressure on your cash flow, it's probably not the right budget — regardless of what a marketing article says you "should" spend.

Think about the full cost of getting your marketing in front of the right people.
One of the easiest ways for a small business to waste a marketing budget is trying to do everything at once.
You might be paying for Google Ads, posting on five social platforms, writing a blog every week, sending emails, and working on SEO — without having enough time or budget to do any of them particularly well.
A smaller budget focused on the right opportunities can be more effective than a larger budget spread across everything.
Not every marketing channel produces results at the same speed.
Paid advertising can generate traffic quickly. SEO may take longer to build. Email marketing can become more valuable as your audience grows.
That means your budget should account for both short-term opportunities and longer-term investments.
There isn't a magic number you need to spend on marketing. The better question is: what can you sustainably invest, where will it have the most impact, and how will you know if it's working?
If you're spending money on marketing but aren't sure whether it's going toward the right things, let's take a look at what you're currently doing and where your biggest opportunities are.
