Should my business be optimizing for AI search?

Yes — but don't treat AI search as a replacement for SEO.

People are increasingly using tools like ChatGPT and Gemini to research businesses, compare options, and get recommendations. Making sure your business is easy for these systems to understand is becoming another part of having a strong online presence.

What does optimizing for AI search actually mean?

AI search optimization, sometimes called AEO or GEO, is about making your business and its information easier for AI systems to understand and reference.

That starts with the basics:

  • Clearly explain what your business does
  • Make your services easy to understand
  • Show where you operate
  • Answer the questions your customers actually ask
  • Keep your business information consistent across the web
  • Build a website that search engines and AI systems can understand
  • Establish credibility through reviews, mentions, and other trusted sources

It's not about finding a secret trick that makes ChatGPT recommend you.

It's about building a business presence that AI can confidently understand.

Do you need to do something completely different from SEO?

Not necessarily.

A lot of what helps with traditional SEO also helps AI systems understand your business.

Clear content, useful information, strong website structure, relevant pages, good technical SEO, and consistent business information are all valuable.

The difference is that you're also thinking about questions and context, not just individual keywords.

Someone might search Google for:

"Law firm Montreal"

But they might ask ChatGPT:

"Who are the best law firms in Montreal that specializes in civil litigation"

Your website needs to provide enough useful information for that second question too.

Is AI search worth prioritizing right now?

For most businesses, I'd say yes — but proportionally.

You don't need to abandon everything you're doing and spend your entire marketing budget on AI optimization.

If your website has basic SEO problems, unclear services, outdated information, or weak local visibility, fix those things as well.

Then start making your content more useful for the questions your customers are asking.

You're not choosing between SEO and AI search.

You're building a stronger online presence that can be understood by both.

Not sure where AI search fits into your marketing?

You don't need to overhaul your entire strategy. Let's look at what you're already doing and where AI search optimization could actually make sense.
