How does local SEO work?

Local SEO helps search engines understand where your business is, what you offer, and which local searches you're relevant for. It can help your business appear in Google Maps, local search results, and other location-based searches.

Location changes the search

When someone searches for something like:

"coffee shop near me"

Google needs to determine which businesses are actually nearby and relevant.

That's different from a search like:

"how to make cold brew"

where the searcher's location may not matter much.

Local SEO helps connect your business with searches where location is part of the intent.

Your Google Business Profile matters

Your Google Business Profile is one of the most visible parts of your local presence.

Your business name, category, address or service area, hours, services, photos, reviews, and other information help Google understand your business and determine when it may be relevant to a local search.

Keeping your profile accurate and active matters too.

Publishing updates, adding photos, responding to reviews, and keeping your information current can all help reinforce that your business is active and accurately represented.

Your website matters too

Local SEO doesn't happen entirely inside Google Business Profile.

Your website should clearly communicate what you do and where you operate.

Your service pages, location information, content, internal links, and technical SEO can all help search engines understand your local relevance.

For example, a plumber serving West Vancouver may benefit from clearly explaining the services they provide and the communities they serve rather than simply putting a list of town names in the footer.

Reviews and mentions help build the bigger picture

Google can encounter information about your business across the web.

Reviews (especially with photos), business directories, local organizations, industry websites, news articles, and other relevant websites can all help establish your business and its connection to a particular place.

Consistency matters here.

If your business information is different across multiple sources, it can make it harder for search engines to confidently understand your business.

There isn't one local SEO ranking factor

Local search isn't determined by one thing.

Google considers a range of signals to determine which businesses are relevant to a particular local search.

That's why simply adding your city to your website isn't a local SEO strategy.

Local SEO is about building a clear, consistent, and trustworthy picture of your business, so search engines can connect you with the people searching for what you offer.
