Should I build my website myself or hire a professional?

It depends on your business, budget, skills, and how important your website is to your growth. Building it yourself can make sense for some businesses, while hiring a professional can save time and give you a stronger foundation.

Building it yourself

DIY website builders have come a long way. Platforms like Webflow, Squarespace, and WordPress can give you the tools to build a professional-looking website without knowing how to code.

Doing it yourself can be a good option if:

  • You have a limited budget
  • You enjoy learning and working on your website
  • Your website needs are fairly simple
  • You have the time to maintain it
  • You're comfortable figuring things out as you go

The trade-off is that your time has value too.

A website might technically be free to build, but if you spend 40 hours learning how to build it, write the content, troubleshoot problems, and make everything work, that isn't really free.

Hiring a professional

A professional can bring experience in more than just making the website look good.

They can help with things like structure, user experience, SEO, AEO, accessibility, content organization, analytics, integrations, and making sure the website supports your actual business goals.

Hiring someone may make more sense if:

  • Your website is important to generating leads or sales
  • You don't have the time or interest to build it yourself
  • Your website has more complex requirements
  • You're struggling to get your current website to perform
  • You want uniqenessi rather than just a template

So which one is better?

Neither is automatically better.

A DIY website that clearly communicates your business and helps customers take action is better than an expensive website that doesn't.

But a DIY website may cost substantially more over time if it doesn't convert clients or clearly communicate your business.

The better question is:

What does your business need from its website, and who is best positioned to make that happen?

If you're comfortable doing the work and your needs are simple, DIY might be perfectly reasonable.

If your website is an important part of your business and you don't want to spend your time figuring everything out yourself, hiring a professional may be a worthwhile investment.
