There are a few reasons ChatGPT might not mention your business. Your business may not be relevant to the specific question, there may not be enough trustworthy information about you online, or ChatGPT may simply have better or more relevant options to recommend.
And sometimes, there isn't anything wrong with your business at all.
ChatGPT doesn't have one permanent list of businesses that it recommends.
Its answer can change depending on exactly what someone asks.
For example, asking:
"What are some good web designers in Toronto?"
is different from:
"Who builds affordable Webflow websites for small businesses in Toronto?"
Your business might be a great fit for one question but not another.
That's why being "recommended by ChatGPT" isn't really the same as ranking in a traditional search result.
AI systems need information to understand businesses.
If your website doesn't clearly explain what you do, who you serve, where you work, or what makes you different, there may simply not be enough context for ChatGPT to confidently determine that you're relevant.
The same applies if your business information is sparse or inconsistent across the web.
Even if ChatGPT knows about your business, it doesn't mean it will recommend you.
There may be businesses with more relevant services, stronger online authority, more established reputations, or information that better matches the question being asked.
For a local search, factors like location and service area can also make a big difference.
If someone asks for a photographer in Nelson and you work exclusively in Castlegar, another business may simply be a better answer.
This is an important distinction.
Google generally returns a set of search results that you can browse through. AI search can instead use information from multiple sources to generate a response to a specific question.
That means there isn't necessarily a single position you can look at and say, "I'm ranking #7 in ChatGPT."
Your visibility can change depending on the question, the information available, the AI system being used, and whether it has access to current web information.
If your business isn't appearing in AI answers, it's worth investigating — but don't immediately assume your SEO is broken.
Look at the bigger picture:
Those answers can help identify whether you have a visibility problem or whether you're simply testing questions that aren't a strong match for your business.
And if there is an opportunity to improve your AI visibility, many of the same fundamentals that support good SEO will help.
If your customers are increasingly using AI to discover businesses like yours, understanding why you're being left out is worth paying attention to.
